  • Rivkeh marries Aryeh and has Asher in 1943.
  • Rivkeh's brother Yaakov dies while traveling for the Rabbi. Rivkeh falls ill with grief.
  • Rivkeh gets over her grief and decides to finish the work that Yaakov began. She asks the Rabbi if she can go to college and he grants her his permission—she is the first woman in the Ladover Hasidic community to receive permission of this sort from the Rabbi.
  • Asher draws increasingly unpretty pictures, which alarm Rivkeh, but she doesn't stop him from expressing his gift.
  • Rivkeh goes to college and gets a degree in Russian in order to learn more about Russian Jews. She is worried about how much her husband travels, especially given the fact that her brother died traveling.
