It's Antoine's diary we're reading and Antoine's struggles that we're hearing about throughout Nausea. That means he's our guy, as far as being a protagonist goes. Throughout this book, we see Antoine fighting to give some sort of meaning to his life, and for the most part we might even sympathize with him, since we're stuck with him as our protagonist… whether we like it or not.
