Henry Lennox Timeline and Summary
MoreHenry Lennox Timeline and Summary
- Henry shows up at the Shaws' house in London for Edith Shaw's wedding to his brother, Captain Lennox. During the pre-wedding gatherings, he makes an effort to talk to Margaret Hale.
- Henry inadvertently offends Margaret by saying that her home village sounds like something from a fairy tale. Little does he know that Margaret is a proud young woman who's quick to take offense.
- After Edith's wedding, Henry visits Margaret at her home in Helstone. When they go out for a walk together, he proposes to her. She turns him down and he returns home crushed.
- Later in the novel, Margaret writes to Henry looking for help. She needs him to find out whether he can mount a decent defense for Margaret's brother Frederick. Henry is a lawyer, after all, and Margaret's brother can't return to England or he'll be arrested and executed for leading a mutiny back in his navy days.
- Eventually, Henry determines that there's no hope for Frederick's appeal. By this time, both of Margaret's parents have died and she has returned to live in London.
- Henry decides that he's going to try proposing to Margaret again. Before he can get a chance, though, Margaret becomes engaged to Mr. Thornton and the book ends.
