Mr. Hale Timeline and Summary
MoreMr. Hale Timeline and Summary
- Mr. Hale returns to Helstone village with his daughter Margaret after attending Edith Shaw's wedding. It's clear that something's bugging him, although we don't know what just yet.
- After a week or so of staying alone in his library, Mr. Hale tells Margaret that he can no longer keep his job as a clergyman because he no longer believes in the church. He also asks Margaret to give the bad news to his wife, Mrs. Hale.
- Mr. Hale moves his family to the industrial northern town of Milton, where he finds work as a private tutor. Things don't go so well. His wife's health quickly deteriorates and he totally blames himself for moving her to a polluted town like Milton.
- Mr. Hale's only pleasure while living in Milton is chatting with his favorite student, Mr. Thornton.
- After his wife dies, Mr. Hale is pretty much aimless in life. He leaves all of the household affairs to Margaret and spends his days moping.
- During a trip to Oxford with his buddy Mr. Bell, Mr. Hale maintains that if he had it all to do over again, he'd still leave the church. That night, he dies in his sleep.
