Omeros Book II, Chapter XIV Summary

i

  • We're zipping back through time to 18th-century Netherlands, where Major Plunkett's ancestor, a British midshipman, is trying to gather intelligence against hostile Dutch merchants.
  • This Plunkett ancestor takes a coach to the ports, sharing the ride with a poor farmer and his chickens.

ii

  • Midshipman Plunkett makes it to the port and writes down his observations, which will be useful to his superiors.
  • He is nearly caught by the night watch, and is reminded of hunting hares—only this time, he's the hare. Eek.

iii

  • Now we are in the Caribbean, where the British are defending their colonial possessions against the French and Americans.
  • The British are using slaves to help move and position the cannons on the island in order to disable French ships, and among these slaves is Afolabe, Achille's ancestor. His leadership is instrumental to the success of that battle, so an admiral changes his name to Achilles.
