  • We get a glimpse of Hector's van, the Comet, with its leopard-skin seats.
  • Hector left his fisherman's life because he felt that Helen still loved Achille, however he isn't doing so well as a driver, and he doesn't make any money in his new venture.

  • Time is passing: St. Lucia achieves independence from Britain, but it doesn't change the socioeconomic situation of those on the island.
  • It has made a difference, we are told, to Plunkett, though, who loves the island but feels like an outsider.
