Mrs. Collins (Anne Hegira)

Character Analysis

She's feisty. She's sassy. She…barely has any lines in the movie.

But that's okay. Mrs. Collins fills her role with aplomb. After Joey dies, she says to the police:

MRS. COLLINS: He was the one longshoreman with guts enough to talk to them crime investigators. Everybody knows that.

Joey's dad tells her to shut up—since he's still thinking of Edie's safety. But she gives the audience, and the cops, a crucial piece of info. We know that Johnny Friendly and his mobsters are the men responsible for Joey's murder.

So here's to you, Mrs. Collins. You served the movie as a noble information tool.
