- When Victor gets to Mr. Spiro's house, he goes inside and finds that there's a duffel bag on the floor with books and clothes next to it. He realizes that Mr. Spiro is going away.
- Mr. Spiro says that he's leaving tomorrow for Wisconsin and that he'll be away until the fall. This really upsets Victor because he's just gotten to know Mr. Spiro and he wants to keep talking to him regularly.
- Mr. Spiro tells him to finish up his collecting and then come back later tonight to chat before he leaves. Victor swears that he'll come back, especially since he was planning to talk to Mr. Spiro about how his father isn't really his father.
- Victor hurries through the rest of the houses before he reaches Mrs. Worthington's house. He wants to see her again, but there's just a white envelope with the word "Paperboy" written on it outside the door.
- The note inside says that the Worthingtons will be cancelling the paper; it includes a five-dollar bill to cover what they owe. Victor feels like all the adults in his life are making things seriously complicated.
