- Lauren finds a name for her belief system: Earthseed.
- Lauren feels she's discovering rather than inventing the religion, exploring it rather than creating it. Everything that exists is Godseed, and people in particular are Earthseed. Their destiny is to settle among the stars.
- Lauren's verses say that the universe exists for the shaping of God, and God exists for the shaping of the universe. Also, all that people touch they change, and all that people change changes them. The only lasting truth is Change, and God is Change.
- Lauren plans to put all her verses into a single volume and use them to inspire people once she's older and her youth isn't a factor any longer in how people react to her.

- Lauren finishes preparing a small survival pack. It's got matches, bandages, spoons, forks, raw seed, her journal, her Earthseed notebook, and more.
- Lauren asks her father if she can keep a gun, but he doesn't think a weapon would be safe in her room. Her brothers might mess with it.
- Lauren asks her father where he'd go if they were driven from the neighborhood. He says he'd go to the neighbors or to the college where he works—and not up north to Oregon, Washington, and Canada, where some are headed because of rumors that necessities are cheaper there and things are better.
- Lauren is intrigued by the possibility of someday moving north, and she writes in her Earthseed notebook that a tree cannot grow in its parents' shadows. Obviously, she's, like, the tree and stuff.
