- The narrator gives us the scoop on what happened after the duel.
- The townspeople have heartily embraced anyone having anything to do with the duel, including Pudd'nhead who was a back-up fighter.
- The town loves the twins even more after the duel and they're invited to run for city government. Tom isn't at all happy about that because he's still angry at Luigi for kicking him into the crowd that night and getting him into trouble.
- One night Constable Blake, Pudd'nhead, and Tom randomly meet on the street. In an attempt to get under Blake's skin, Tom asks him how the investigation into the robberies is going.
- Blake admits that they haven't caught the woman suspected of the crime yet. But have no fear, he adds, because he's hot on her trail.
- Then, turning his attention to needling Pudd'nhead, Tom asks who got the rewards for the knife and for the thief (since, we'll recall, Pudd'nhead previously assured everyone that Luigi would get his knife back).
- Pudd'nhead grudgingly admits that no one has yet claimed the reward, but he insists that his scheme will eventually work.
- Pause and Rewind: We go back to the night when Pudd'nhead first mentioned his scheme in which Luigi would get his knife back even though it would be unlikely that the thief would turn it knowing there was also a reward being offered to catch the thief.
- At the time, Tom taxed his small brain trying to imagine what Pudd'nhead's scheme could possibly be, but he couldn't figure it out. So he went to Roxy to give her "smarter head" a crack at it and, the narrator tells us, she came up with the answer.
- Fast Forward and Un-pause: Tom reveals Pudd'nhead's scheme to Blake and Pudd'nhead as they're standing in the street: the reward for the knife was advertised and the reward for the thief was offered in a private letter to pawnbrokers (so the thief wouldn't suspect there was any trap being set when he went to sell the knife).
- Wilson confirms that was indeed the scheme.
- Tom proposes that the scheme failed because the knife really doesn't exist after all and that Luigi just made up the whole story about the knife to look cool.
- Ta-ta. Tom leaves the Blake and Pudd'nhead to think about his suggestion. Blake believes Tom's theory, but Pudd'nhead is still skeptical.
- Booyah: Tom feels mighty pleased that he managed to damage the reputation of the twins.
- A few nights later, Tom (trying to get back in his uncle's good graces) tells Driscoll that the real reason he didn't want to fight Luigi is that he is a confessed killer and that Tom didn't want to meet such a person in a field of honor.
- What?! Driscoll is shocked at the news and tells Tom that he's proud of him. At the same time, he's really miffed that Luigi allowed the judge to meet him in a field of honor.
- Driscoll pledges to ruin the twins' chances of being elected to office and then he will shoot them. He even gives Tom money to help him start a nasty campaign against the twins.
- Roxy tells Tom to go to St. Louis so he can cash in some of his plunder for money. She tells him that she'll meet up with him there.
- But as Tom's on the boat en route to the city, someone robs him (hey, what goes around comes around, right?).
