To be clear, there are definitely worse mothers in the world than Waverly's. That said, there are also a lot of moms who are way nicer. Waverly's mom takes her daughter's talent for chess and sucks all the joy out of it, forcing Waverly to forsake her childhood in favor of chess greatness and embarrassing her pretty much every time they leave the house. Does Mom want Waverly to have a good life? Absolutely—she just can't seem to loosen her grip on Waverly enough to let her actually live. Bummer.
