Robots

If humanity striving upwards is the protagonist, the antagonist would have to be those pesky robots. Though, of course, the robots are also in some ways the children of humans, which makes them human themselves. You could even see robots as the protagonists and humanity as the antagonists. After all, it's the robots who are enslaved, and their revolution seems justified in many ways. Maybe there's no difference between good guys and bad guys. Maybe the bad guys are the good guys—just as R.U.R. backwards is… R.U.R. (woah—deep stuff, Shmoopers).
