Mark Petrie Timeline & Summary

  • Mark's family moves to 'Salem's Lot.
  • Mark beats up the bully Richie Boddin; this is the first sign that Mark is awesome.
  • Mark's friends Ralphie and Danny Glick disappear on the way to his house to play with his monster figures.
  • Danny Glick, now a vampire, comes to Mark's window and asks to be let in. Mark banishes him with a plastic cross from his monster set. That's the second sign that Mark is awesome.
  • Mark gets an ash stake and goes to the Marsten House to kill Barlow. He runs into Susan Norton on the same mission, and they team up.
  • Straker catches Mark and Susan, planning to feed them to Barlow. Mark escapes, badly wounding Straker. Biggest sign that Mark is awesome yet.
  • But Barlow gets Susan. She is not awesome. Too bad for her.
  • Mark goes to Ben to tell him that Susan has been turned into a vampire.
  • Mark and Ben join forces with the other vampire hunters and return to the Marsten House, where they stake Susan.
  • Barlow has left a note threatening Mark's parents. He and Father Callahan go to try to convince Mark's mom and dad to come to the hospital where the vampires can protect themselves.
  • Barlow appears and kills Mark's mom and dad. Callahan stalls Barlow and allows Mark to escape. Mark promises to kill Barlow. Which he eventually does because, well, you know.
  • Mark goes to the hospital to meet Matt and Ben. On the way, he trips Ann Norton, who is a half-vampire and is planning to kill Matt.
  • The next morning, Ben and Mark and Jimmy set about preparing to fight the vampires.
  • Jimmy is killed, but Ben and Mark manage to stake Barlow.
  • They leave 'Salem's Lot, traveling across the country.
  • Through newspaper clippings, they eventually discover that the vampires still infest 'Salem's Lot.
  • They come back to the Lot to set a fire, burn out the vampires' hiding places, and hopefully stake them all. As Shmoop has said before, everybody needs a hobby.
