Character Role Analysis
The Witting Family
Even though Sarah's stepping into a world and place that's completely alien to her, the Witting family rises to the occasion and tries to make her feel more at home. Jacob creates a dune out of hay for her and teaches her how to drive a horse-drawn wagon so she can go into town and not feel so isolated. And the children try to show her how lovely the prairie can be—leading her to see the livestock, showing her the cow pond, and telling her about how cozy and homey their winters at home are. Most of all, they all show her love and acceptance so Sarah doesn't feel like a stranger in their midst.
