- The ship catches up to the Ray a few days later, and the captain is confident they will catch the ship. Nailer needs to stay out of sight, however, so the people on the Ray don't spot him.
- Knot has been teaching Nailer to read, and although Nailer sometimes finds it boring, the work isn't too difficult.
- When Nailer is studying, he asks Knot about whether the half-man has always had a master. Knot says that he doesn't want to work for anyone else. Then he says that his nature is to fight and he will relish this one because of his loyalty to Nita's clan.
- Nailer thinks that family isn't made of blood; it's made of people.
