Slocum

Slocum's a guy we sometimes like to hate, yet when we put him up against everyone else, he sort of emerges as the least of all evils. We grow fond of him not simply because the book is about him, but also because he has a witty way of making us see the absurdities around him as he sees them. We find, ultimately, that we begin to align ourselves with him—and we may even find that we start to like him, after all.
