Spellbound Scene 4 Summary

  • We're back in Constance's office, where that dope Fleurot is lying on her couch and inappropriately teasing her about Edwardes.
  • Inappropriate teasing is what he does. It's like his personal brand.
  • Harry comes in with a note from Dr. Edwardes saying that Mr. Garmes is with him.
  • Cut to Garmes in Edwardes' office. Garmes says he's killed his father.
  • Constance comes in and explains to Edwardes that Garmes is a textbook example of the guilt complex, about which Edwardes has written a textbook (The Labyrinth of the Guilt Complex).
  • Constance explains that guilt complexes result when kids think they caused some disaster, and then the guilt stays with them into adult life.
  • (This is both silly psychobabble and important info for the silly psychobabble plot.)
  • Mr. Garmes is ushered out.
  • Edwardes is confused by the case, which is weird because Edwardes is supposed to be Mr. Knowledgeable-About-Guilt-Complexes Guy.
  • Edwardes says he has a headache… and then asks Constance if she'll take the afternoon off with him.
  • There's an odd phone call from someone who claims to know Edwardes, but he says he doesn't know them.
  • In case you missed it, there's something weird about ol' Edwardes. He's not what he appears. (Foreshadowing alert.)
  • But anyway he and Constance go out for a picnic.
