Structuralism Texts - Structural Anthropology by Claude Lévi-Strauss (1958)

This book is the bible of structural anthropology. Claude Lévi-Strauss talks about kinship, about mythology, about the links between the study of language and the study of culture, about Amazonian rainforest tribes—you name it, it fits into his structuralist view of world society.

Some questions to think about as you read:

(1) What is the relationship between linguistics and culture that Lévi-Strauss outlines in this book? What are some examples he gives to demonstrate that link?

(2) How "scientific" is the methodology that Lévi-Strauss proposes? How does he back up his claims that culture can be studied from a scientific perspective? Are those claims still legit today?
