Antagonist

Antagonist

Character Role Analysis

White

Although White's survival is central to the play, he's really more of an antagonist since he exists to frustrate Black's attempts at saving him. His stubbornness and his grudging willingness to stay for a while propel Black's efforts—it seems he might be getting somewhere—but White refuses to move, so the transformation Black is seeking just won't occur. White defeats him simply by failing to see Black's perspective on life and faith, then he praises death and walks out of Black's apartment.
