Black

Black's the protagonist because he's the one trying to attain something, namely saving White. He has to use all of his best insights to try to accomplish this. Perhaps there are a few hints of potential success early on, but his quest eventually turns tragic. He waits for the inspiration he needs to arrive, but it never shows up, despite his genuine eloquence, investment, and brilliance.
