Technically, the mentor should guide the protagonist, but White fails to be a protagonist—he's too reluctant to play Black's game—so instead Black fails to be a mentor. He would be, if he could convince White to turn his own life into a quest for something other than death, becoming a protagonist in his own story. But White just won't do it. His course is set, so try though he might, Black fails to sway him.
