Character Role Analysis

Son

In terms of identifying the protagonist of this book, it can be tough to choose between Son and Jade, since they occupy the two sides of the argument that defines this book. In the end, though, it's fair to say that Son is the protagonist because it's his story that begins and ends the book. He has the last—and first—word.

Son's desire to be a good partner to Jade always come into conflict with his desire to live a simple, quiet life in Eloe. In fact, the inability for these two desires to come together is pretty much the defining conflict of the novel. It is also Son's arrival at the Street mansion that upsets the tenuous balance of the household, causing the family drama on Isle des Chevaliers to reach a boiling point.
