The Terminator

This bit of mechanized murder has one purpose: to kill our protagonist Sarah. By killing her, it will prevent her from teaching John Connor to defend the humans against the machines. Since Sarah's destiny is to do just that, this creates a conflict between the two. Sarah wants to live because, well, obviously. And the Terminator wants to kill her to change the future. The conflict between the two is the driving force of the film.
