Protagonist
Character Role Analysis
Augie March
This is The Adventures of Augie March, and he is the narrator, so he is obviously the protagonist of his own story. In some ways, though, he's one of the less defined characters in the story and is more like the thread that ties all the events and people together. For a guy telling a story about his life, he doesn't talk a whole lot about himself. And despite all the weird things that happen to him, his personality and basic outlook on the world don't change. Don't worry—that's kind of the point. Augie may not achieve or discover his goals, but he won't let life beat him either. He maintains his hope, even when he has to laugh at its absurdity.
