Helen Bober Timeline and Summary

Helen meets Nat Pearl, a former lover, on the subway. She hasn't seen him in a while.
Later, she goes on a walk with Louis Karp, another Jewish boy in the neighborhood. He isn't interested in her deep philosophy.
Helen wonders what she is destined for.
She starts meeting Frank Alpine at the library.
She refuses gifts from Frank, not ready to make a romantic commitment.
When she finds the gifts in the trash, she takes them and tries to get Frank to get his money back.
After a time, she begins seeing Frank romantically.
To placate her mother, she agrees to go out on a date with Nat. She'll meet Frank afterwards.
At their meeting spot, she's attacked by Ward Minogue.
Frank overpowers Ward, but takes her himself.
Helen falls into despair and self-hatred.
She trashes a wooden flower Frank gives her and refuses to forgive him.
After her father dies and Frank takes over, she begins to forgive him.
Helped by the extra money Frank is making, Helen returns to college.
