- Sometime between chapters 5 and 6, Wang Lung buys the land. It isn't quite as great of an experience as he expected, since no one is impressed by the fact that he has money, but hey, the land is his.
- The agent who took Wang Lung's money acts like it was just enough spare change for some gum, and that makes Wang Lung promise himself that one day he will own so much land that the House of Hwang will be nothing in comparison to him. When this guy holds a grudge, he holds a grudge.
- O-lan is pregnant again. Wang Lung isn't so thrilled this time. He's so used to O-lan helping him farm that he's annoyed that she needs to go home and give birth. Even when she comes back right after she had a baby all by herself, he just tells her to shrug it off and get back to work. Best. Husband. Ever.
- By the way, it's another boy. Grandpa's excited because that means the older kid gets to sleep with him and be his own personal electric blanket.
