Hippolito

Character Analysis

Hippolito seems more even-keeled and practical than Vindice. He's angered by injustice and can initiate vengeance when he thinks it's necessary (check out Act 1, Scene 4 to see this in action), and he typically goes along with Vindice's revenge plans, too.

Importantly, Hippolito tempers Vindice's impassioned speeches and raises practical questions. For instance, in 1.3.17, he seems to think Vindice is exaggerating, and in 4.2.21-26, he points out the practicalities of all the spy stuff. Like a lot of sidekicks, he's the mellower balance to a dramatic personality. He's generally pretty upright and fairly mellow, except for that revenge business. You get the feeling he'd be a pretty nice guy for the right girl to settle down with if he weren't so bent on killing the baddies.
