Character Analysis
Dorn is a bad boy. He's one of the Watchers who control the Empire's magic for the Emperor; he represents the South of the Empire and is the second most powerful Watcher (8.159). Tilja first meets Dorn when he comes up on the walls of Talagh, hunting down the power that Axtrig released. He's greedy for more magic, so he keeps on hunting for Tilja because wants the spoon's powers.
Dorn appears to help Silena steal Axtrig's power. He's shirtless, "with a wild tangle of hair reaching almost to his waist, muscular arms with heavy bracelets above and below the elbows," a fancy belt, trousers, and jeweled sandals (9.102). He carries a whip with knotted thongs. His real appearance is that of a really old guy with rheumy eyes and cracked lips—not Fabio on a bad day.
When he catches up to Tilja in Goloroth, Dorn shows his desire for magic at all costs. He terrorizes the people beside her and paralyzes them temporarily, all in the name of magic:
The mass of people fell back, not of their own accord but as if they had been forced to do so. With a snarl of wretched timber the door burst open and a man stalked into the shed, lit by the web of fire that blazed from the many-thonged whip he carried on his shoulder. […]The throng at the door stood motionless before him, many with mouths wide open in the screams they had started and could not finish. In all the shed, only Tilja and the three whose hands gripped hers could move a muscle. (10.115)
In case you weren't sure, a throng is "a large, densely packed crowd of people or animals"—which means that Dorn is willing to mess with—and super freak out—a whole lot of people to further his own agenda. Stay classy, Dorn.
