- Lily picks up with her story on a scorching hot day. Because of the heat, she and August had to go out and make sure the bees had everything they needed.
- After returning to the house and having lunch, August and Lily went outside to find Rosaleen and May spraying each other with a hose. August and Lily joined in, and then when June came out to see what was going on, Lily sprayed her. In spite of her attempts to stay grumpy, June got into it as well. As a result of these shenanigans, June and Lily finally broke the ice and became friends.
- Later, everyone went to lie down to stay out of the intense heat. Unable to rest, Lily went back into the house and found May using a trail of marshmallows and graham crackers to try to get a roach out of the house. Since this was Lily's mother's trick, Lily decided to ask May if she knew her mom. May said yes, and the topic seemed to upset her a bit, sending her back to the wall. Obviously, that revelation gave Lily a lot to chew on.
- A few days later, she felt ready to try to talk to August about her real reasons for being at the pink house. However, on her way over to have that talk, Zach told Lily that August was already occupied helping Sugar-Girl with a personal crisis. So, Lily went into town with Zach to get a part for the honey wagon.
- When they got to town, they discovered a group of white men guarding the movie theater from the supposed upcoming visit from Jack Palance. Some of Zach's friends were hanging out near the theater, and Zach got out of the wagon to join them. One of the boys, Jackson, loudly made fun of the men for thinking Jack Palance was showing up. When one of the men responded, Jackson threw his RC Cola bottle at him.
- None of the boys would admit to having thrown the bottle—or not thrown it—so they all got taken to jail while Lily looked on from the wagon. She didn't have the keys, so she ended up walking home. Clayton Forrest was there when she arrived and gave them an update on Zach. He said he was going to try to get Zach out, but he wasn't optimistic that it would be a quick process.
- Lily later went to visit Zach with August. Unfortunately, they weren't allowed to be alone with him, so August kept mostly to bee talk. Zach did manage to ask Lily if she'd been writing in her book.
- Throughout Zach's imprisonment, Lily, Rosaleen, June, and August had been trying to keep May in the dark about the situation for fear that it would upset her. Unfortunately, one night Zach's mother called, and May answered. The secret was then out.
- May's reaction was unexpected—rather than crying, she was quiet. She did, however, go out to her wall. She refused company.
