Character Analysis
Zach works in the honey house with August and Lily, and he's August's godson. He is an impressive kid; as Lily remarks when she meets him:
He was about to be a junior at the black high school, where he made all A's and played halfback on the football team. (7.15)
Also, he can run fast, which August is thinking might get him a college scholarship. He wants to be a lawyer when he grows up.
Zach and Lily forge a strong bond that soon takes a romantic turn, but they decide it's too dangerous to pursue anything on account of the racial climate in 1960s South Carolina . . . but they leave the door open for something someday.
