Bailey's Death
Sure, Rachel takes what Lennie wants (first chair in band, plus Joe, for a brief period) and it's super satisfying to read the scene where Lennie stands up to her. But Rachel isn't that big of a deal compared to the overwhelming invisible thing Lennie is forced to struggle with each day: the reality of her sister's death. Bailey's death throws Lennie into crisis in a number of ways—she has to grieve her sister as well as figure out how to be her own person—so much as Lennie loves her, we're going to call her death the big bad antagonist in this book.
