  • The Yankees burn down Bayard's family's home.
  • Once again, Bayard rides off with Granny and Ringo; this time they're trying to find the silver, mules, and slaves that the Union soldiers took from them.

  • Bayard, Granny, and Ringo recover their lost property—and then some—all due to a clerical error.
  • Even though he's not exactly the brains behind the operation, Bayard helps Granny and Ringo run a mule-stealing racket.
  • After their deals turn sour, Bayard tries to talk Granny out of one last job. But he fails, and it costs her her life.
  • Bayard, accompanied by Ringo and Uncle Buck, goes out hunting the man who killed Granny. It's vengeance time.
  • In a showdown, Bayard kills Grumby (the murderer) and nails his body up for everyone to see.
  • At law school (a few years later), Bayard gets word that his father has been killed by a political rival.
  • Instead of murdering his father's killer, Bayard just faces him down unarmed. He escapes with his life and his honor intact. And sets the scene for a new breed of Southern gentleman.
