• Bayard plays war with Ringo. For now, it's all fun and games.
• Bayard, trying to defend his home along with Ringo in his father's absence, shoots a Union horse.
• The boys hide under Granny's skirts as the Union soldiers search the house for them. They get away with it, those lucky dogs.
• Bayard, Ringo, and Granny ride toward Memphis, but are ambushed by Yankees.
• The boys run away and forget Granny in the wagon; they meet up with John, who brings them home.
• Granny's there waiting and boy, is she mad.
• The Yankees burn down Bayard's family's home.
• Once again, Bayard rides off with Granny and Ringo; this time they're trying to find the silver, mules, and slaves that the Union soldiers took from them.
• At the river crossing the wagon falls in and Granny, Ringo, and Bayard are fished out into a Union camp.
• Bayard, Granny, and Ringo recover their lost property—and then some—all due to a clerical error.
