Character Analysis
As you might expect from a war novel, The Unvanquished has no shortage of villains. Grumby's Independents—oh-so creatively named after their leader, Grumby—are the worst of the worst. Which is unexpected because they are Southerners themselves.
The Man with the Black-Haired Hands, Bridger, and Matt Bowden are tangled up in Grumby's gang some way or another, but they end up turning him over to Bayard and Ringo, showing us that there is some sort of honor among thieves. Or at least, the desire to get rid of the ringleader once they get sick of him.
