Character Analysis
Chuck is the most prominent of Jack's various hooligan friends. He comes from a religious family and "talked dark religion when he was drinking." (20.12) Jack "felt easier with him than with the others" (20.12), though it doesn't stop Chuck from bringing Jack into the world of drinking, smoking, and acting like a hooligan. Chuck is merely the big shot out of a number of Jack's hooligan friends, which includes Jerry Huff, Terry Silver, and Terry Taylor. The only real difference is the exact type of criminal behavior they engage in.
