Character Analysis
Roy is like Dwight 1.0, arriving in Utah as part of some kind of sadistic head game. He treats Jack's mom like crap, and tries to make like a normal family. "He would hold no grudges as long as my mother walked the line" (2.19), marking him as just another hitter in a world full of hitter. Jack likes him—"I thought Roy was what a man should be." (2.23)—but Roy isn't around long enough to show his true colors. Wolff includes him as a way of showing that Mom's had a lot of men like Dwight in her life, and that she's accustomed to having them beat on her.
