John Renfrew and Gordon Bernstein

The protagonist is the person we root for throughout the book and hope will ultimately succeed in his or her goal. Renfrew and Gordon's goals may not be those of a classic science fiction protagonist—neither are trying to defeat some alien force, save John Connor, nor get to the choppa while they are hunted by the universe's best hunter—but protagonists they still are.

Renfrew is trying to reverse a worldwide ecological disaster by sending a message back in time, and Gordon, who has stumbled upon said message, is trying to figure out what this odd background noise in his experiment means. If both succeed, they will save their respective worlds from certain doom. It may lack a spectacularly expensive CGI battle, but it is exciting nonetheless, and we sincerely hope both succeed.
