Love Interest
Character Role Analysis
Fayaway
No one's going to mistake Tommo's adoration of Fayaway for someone who's looking for wife-material. She's pretty, she's graceful, and she giggles a lot. They don't share a language, but they do share time together, boating on the lake, or sleeping side-by-side. And when Tommo leaves, she weeps "violently" (34.15).
There's no question that they care for each other, but it's vacation love, camp love, not "real life" love for Tommo, at least—no matter how many times he calls her the loveliest woman he's ever seen.
