War Horse Chapter 15 Quotes

How we cite the quotes:
(Chapter.Paragraph)

Quote 1

I stood in a wide corridor of mud, a wasted, shattered landscape, between two vast, unending rolls of barbed wire. [...] This was what the soldiers called "no-man's-land." (15.19)

We're lucky Joey's our narrator because no human soldier could have ever lived to tell this tale. He ends up in the middle of the war-torn no-man's-land, totally exposed between the trenches. Any soldier would have been shot on sight, but through Joey's surviving eyes, we get a rare glimpse into the situation.

Quote 2

I knew that once I left [Topthorn] I would be alone in the world again, that I would no longer have his strength and support beside me. So I stayed with him and waited. (15.1)

When Topthorn dies, Joey experiences the same intense grief that a human might feel over the death of their own best friend on the battlefield. The bonds of friendship make the horses easy to empathize with, don't you think?

Quote 3

I wandered now through the mists until my good legs could drag me no farther. (15.18)

The fog of war is scarier than any mist from Silent Hill, that's for sure. But Joey, even while wounded, doesn't stop and cower in fear. No, he keeps going toward the unknown. That's one brave horse.
