We Are Seven Questions

Bring on the tough stuff - there’s not just one right answer.

  1. Whose side do you think Wordsworth is on? Does he agree with the little girl or with the speaker? How can you tell?
  2. Do you think that the little girl is naïve? Is she too innocent to understand death? Or is it the speaker who doesn't understand mortality? How can you tell?
  3. Why do you think that Wordsworth wrote "We are Seven" in the form of a ballad?
  4. Why do you think that Wordsworth breaks the ballad form in the last stanza? What's the effect of the new rhyme scheme and the extra line?
  5. Can the living ever really understand the dead? How can we make sense of something that we've never experienced? How do you think the little girl would answer that question?
