• Theo's in Dorning as Anton's printer's devil when Musket comes to get fliers done—but the cops bust up Anton's shop, causing Theo to flee and killing Anton.
• After trekking through unknown land, Theo finally lands on some familiar faces—Las Bombas and Musket. He unwittingly becomes a partner in their schemes to get money.
• In one town, Theo comes across a talented street urchin girl who is really good at creating new and scary voices. Her name's Mickle, and she joins his group of tricksters. They bond; he teaches her to read and write, while she instructs him in how to use a sign language with his fingers.
• Theo invents a necromancy skit called "The Oracle Priestess." He's fine with it until Mickle prophesies for an elderly and poor couple—he gets really ticked that they cheated these old people out of their money, and he insults Mickle. Theo decides to leave LB and his gang behind, so he flees again.
• After wandering aimlessly, Theo ends up in Freyborg, where he becomes mixed up with Florian's Children. He becomes a letter writer by day for Florian and fixes a printing press by night. He never is fully accepted into the group….
• … until Florian tells him that his old friends were captured in Nierkeeping. With Florian and his crew, Theo goes to rescue Las Bombas and Co. while Florian steals weapons from the town arsenal. Theo doesn't take a shot that protects a comrade, and he feels guilty; later, he and Florian—plus Dr. Torrens—discuss principles of morality and who decides what's right.
• Cabbarus's henchman, Skeit, realizes Mickle looks like Princess Augusta and brings the group to the capital. Cabbarus makes them pretend to raise the princess from the dead, so she can tell her dad to abdicate in favor of Cabby. Everyone's surprised when Mickle finally remembers her past—she's Princess Augusta and Cabbarus tried to kill her. Cabby flees, but Theo chases him down.
• Cabbarus isn't Chief Minister anymore, and Theo and Mickle choose to have him exiled, rather than killed. Mickle takes on her official princess-ly duties, while Theo tours the kingdom, with plans to eventually return home to his girlfriend.
