What Pet Should I Get? Writing Style
The Old Back and Forth
The writing style is filled with Seuss's classic rhymes and simple words, which makes it a hoot to read aloud—and a great way for new readers to get acclimated to his strange word world. Additionally, What Pet Should I Get? features a lot of back and forth dialogue between the narrator and his sister, Kay:
Then I looked at Kay.
I said, "What will we do?
I like all the pets that I see.
So do you.
We have to pick ONE pet
and pick it out soon.
You know mother told us
to be back by noon." (11.11-12-4)
The dialogue keeps things fresh and fits the story perfectly since these two characters are having a hard time agreeing on one pet. The dialogue also makes this book fun to read aloud. Try reading it with a friend, with one of you reading for Kay and the other for the narrator.
