Description:

In 1734, François-Marie Arouet, better known by his pen name Voltaire, fled Paris to the region of Champagne, trading the sophisticated capital for acres of rustic vineyards. Once again, the sharp-tongued philosopher had violated French censors. Eight years earlier, he'd escaped to England after the Duc de Rohan accused him of slander. However, his isolation from the continent was far from fruitless. During his time in England, Voltaire developed his philosopher's identity. After a three-year exile, he received permission to return to Paris in 1729, but he came home a different writer and thinker.

According to the passage, Voltaire fled Paris because he

(A)had better opportunities elsewhere
(B)violated the terms of his exile
(C)was accused of slander
(D)violated French censors
