Grade 1

Reading RF.1.3.A

Know the spelling-sound correspondences for common consonant digraphs.

In kindergarten, students were just getting the hang of one-to-one letter-sound correspondences, but in first grade, they should be able to know the spelling-sound correspondences for sounds that go beyond their ABCs. They should be able to sound out common consonant digraphs (like ch, ck, kn, ng, ph, sh, th, and wh) on top of being able to spell 'em out before they add more to the list in second grade.
