Use knowledge that every syllable must have a vowel sound to determine the number of syllables in a printed word.

Kindergartners got started on mastering this substandard, largely by way of sound awareness. In first grade, students should know that syllables are separated by vowel sounds. Once again, the clap-out-the-syllable game can spice up this substandard.
