- Vronsky gets a note from Anna asking him to see her at home while her husband has a Council meeting.
- Vronsky falls asleep and dreams about a peasant with a matted beard who speaks bad French. He wakes up in the middle of the night from fear, but can't figure out why he was so worried.
- He's late to meet Anna, so in her front hallway he runs into Karenin. Vronsky feels bewildered and trapped in his position as a cheat. He wishes Karenin would simply challenge him to a duel. Then they could settle the situation once and for all.
- Vronsky's opinions have changed since his conversation with Anna in the Vrede garden. He no longer believes that his relationship with her will come to an end. He has given himself over completely to Anna, in the same way that she has given herself up completely to him.
- Anna meets him in the drawing room. She says she refuses to quarrel with him. She then puts her hands on his shoulders and looks at him, comparing the real person with the ideal that she carries around in her mind.
