Lolita Book 2, Chapter 27 Summary

  • Humbert receives a letter from Lolita, an event that makes him dizzy. The date is September, 1952.
  • He also receives a letter from John Farlow. John writes that Jean has died and his life has undergone many changes. He needs information about Lolita because someone wants to buy the old Haze house.
  • From Lolita's letter (which notably begins, "Dear Dad"), Humbert finds out that she is married and pregnant. Her husband, Dick, is on the brink of a big job in Alaska and she needs money. She also says that she has "gone through much sadness and hardship" (2.27.6). She is afraid Humbert is mad at her and so doesn't give her home address. The letter is signed "Dolly (Mrs. Richard F. Schiller)."
