Fame
Track and field people aren't exactly rocketing to the top of the fame pyramid. If fame is your goal, you're better off doing almost anything else.
The only time runners, jumpers, and throwers (see, there isn't even a catchy term for them, which forces us to use the awkward title "track and field people") become famous is for the two weeks of the Olympics. They're the best in the world, and banking on this as a springboard is like playing in a thunderstorm in hopes of getting superpowers.
Fame isn't a goal. It's not even a side effect. It's something that just…happens. Randomly and very rarely.
