Character Analysis
Mom, Isabel, and Sylvia
Matt obviously cares a great deal about his family because he works to provide them with money and brings them special, thoughtful gifts from around the world. But other than that, we don't have much evidence that he misses them a whole lot. Whenever he's on shore leave he's happy to see them—but the drive to be airborne once more supersedes his joy at being reunited.
We do know that his mother is a practical woman who lives simply because that is all she can afford. So when Matt brings her the perfume his father used to buy for her it is at once both an extravagance, and also a way for Matt to feel like his father isn't really gone.
