Don Héctor or The Mexican Badlands?

John seems already very experienced at everything he does, despite being only 17, so hardly anyone has anything to teach him or show him. Don Héctor is perhaps the closest to that role, since he teaches John more about breeding and raising horses. If anything, though, John's guide may be the rugged land itself, its barren landscape forcing him to fight for survival and contemplate the impermanence of life at the same time.
