John Grady Cole

John Grady Cole is a fairly typical laconic, tough-guy hero, seemingly right out of Ernest Hemingway's fiction. Despite this, he possesses both youth and compassion, which seem to cut against his experienced, rough-and-tumble ways. His journey is the primary subject of the novel and the narration never leaves him out of view.
